I made this painting during my first winter in Vermont and gave myself permission to go totally wild with the detailwork. I spent hours lost in mazes of tiny lines, made both with tiny paintbrushes as well as pens. There are sections of the painting that have fine white lines that are barely visible. I find deep pleasure in this kind of work and imagining that the right viewer, the one who takes their time, will be rewarded for their close attention.
The title "Progress is not a Matter of Far or Near" is a line from the sacred Buddhist poem "Harmony of Difference and Equality", which I studied while living at Green Gulch Farm / Green Dragon Zen Temple.
The original painting, now in a private collection, is Ink on paper 60x30".
