1,090 Breaths, 2020

Price: $250.00

Size: 12x9"

Media: Archival acrylic ink on paper

I made this piece at Art Monastery Vermont, February 2020, during the Artmonk Practice Period, a 3-week silent retreat. We were meditating many hours each day, eating our meals oryoki style (Zen-style ceremonial eating form), and lifting silence only to sing & chant in the morning and evening. I was in deep connection with my breath.

While all my paintings are made in connection with the breath, this one I took to the next level. Each pen stroke is the length of one exhale, following the flow of the natural breath as opposed to elongating the breath because I wanted a longer line. To ramp up my precision, I counted the number of strokes. To simplify the counting, I counted 10 breaths and then made 1 tally mark on a piece of scrap paper. I was well into the piece before it dawned on me that one of the most basic meditation instructions is to count your breath, up to 10 and then start over again. As with the meditation, so the painting: the process of counting clarifies the moment the mind wanders. This piece was made with 1,090 lines and 1,090 breaths.

This original painting is available with a window matting, bevel cut. The matte is acid-free archival quality. Color is as pictured. The finished dimensions of the matte are 18x20". If you'd like a different color, different size, or an additional matte, it is possible! Just send me an email and we can work it out: suiko@artmonastery.org. You can also contact me through the online form.

Mounted on a cradled birch panel and wired for hanging, sturdy and light. I affix the painting or the print to the birch panel with archival adhesives. There is no glass over the front so it is important not to hang the piece in direct sunlight.

In concordance with my heartfelt wish to honor the earth and be living with increasing ecological sustainability, I use frames have been reclaimed! These are high quality frames that once hung in a hotel in Vermont. The frame is made of wood and painted silver and gold. They do show signs of wear with rich character. I cut the matte myself to make sure it is the perfect size to show off the original painting and look great in the frame. I use archival-quality acid-free matte. A piece of reclaimed backing material (foamboard, chipboard, or matting) is added in the back to secure the original and the matting inside. That backing is then taped to the frame using eco-friendly tape. I use tape so that it would be possible in the future to remove the painting from the frame. The hanging apparatus is extremely sturdy and will work with a simple nail.
